Defining Excellence in the School of Nursing

Student Nurse Achievement Program (SNAP): $1 million

SNAP was developed with the guidance of a nursing student focus group and the advisory board of the University’s East St. Louis Learning Center in order to allow the School to focus its resources and attention on supporting students from underserved communities. SNAP is a five-year bachelor of science in nursing program (versus a traditional four-year program). Students make a commitment to return to their communities for at least one year after graduation to provide quality, competent nursing services through the region’s health care agencies.

Through the endowment of SNAP, the School will ensure that students who wish to enter the program will receive financial assistance and resources that are beyond the scope of what the School can currently offer, as well as the additional support students need to assure their academic success.

Students will receive

• Two years of freshman general course work at the SIUE East St. Louis Learning Center to help them confidently problem solve, write and verbally communicate in nursing courses.
• A laptop computer for use at school and in clinicals. This will provide the students the means to complete Web-based course work, use on-line library resources for research papers and prepare and conduct class presentations. This produces nurses who are fully confident and competent in using computers, which are highly integrated into patient care.
• Daily study sessions with fellow students and a non- nursing faculty mentor who tutors in math, English, science, writing and reading, as well as coaching on time and money management and study skills.
• A nursing faculty mentor from day one in the program to help with curriculum transition and development of a nursing identity.

SNAP will give disadvantaged students the tools to reach their full potential as productive citizens who contribute to the health, stability and quality of life in their communities. It will help the School maintain a diverse enrollment that is truly representative of the population we serve.
