Stratton Quadrangle was named after William J. Stratton, 34th Governor of Illinois. He served in office from 1953 to 1961. In June 1960, he was the speaker at the first Commencement held on the Edwardsville campus.

The quadrangle is designed without no direct pathway between two buildings, ensuring that students have some exposure to nature as they walk from one building to another.

The Rock (official name), located in the quadrangle, was supplied by the same company that provided the granite used in the construction of the core buildings on the campus. The rock is constantly changing color, as campus fraternities and sororities compete to see who can keep it painted their colors the longest.

Stratton Quadrangle can be found as #32 on the Interactive Campus Map.
