Stratton, 34th Governor of Illinois. He served in office from 1953 to 1961. In June 1960, he was the speaker at the first Commencement held on the Edwardsville campus.</p> <p>The quadrangle is designed without no direct pathway between two buildings, ensuring that students have some exposure to nature as they walk from one building to another.</p> <p>The Rock (official name), located in the quadrangle, was supplied by the same company that provided the granite used in the construction of the core buildings on the campus.
