I. Functions of the Committee

The RPAB reviews applications for funding for the Funded University Research (FUR) program and for the Research Grants for Graduate Students (RGGS) program and makes recommendations to the Graduate Dean concerning the awarding of funds. The RPAB may also advise the Graduate Dean on special requests for funding from the R&D Fund (indirect cost recovery moneys allocated to the Graduate School). The RPAB may also review proposals submitted for other research competitions at the request of the Graduate Dean or the Graduate Council.

The RPAB also selects the Paul Simon Outstanding Scholar Award (Simon) winner. The RPAB may also review other research competitions, such as the Hoppe Research Professorship or the Vaughnie J. Lindsay Research Professorship at the request of the Graduate Dean or the Graduate Council.

II. Membership and Number

The Board consists of five at-large members who serve three-year staggered terms. Replacements are elected by the Graduate Council from nominees selected by the Educational and Research Policies Committee in consultation with the Graduate Dean. Nominees are from units not represented in the upcoming term. If nominated, a member whose term is expiring is eligible for re-election. The chair of the committee is elected from among the membership.

III. Selection Procedure

A. The Educational and Research Policies Committee, in consultation with the Graduate Dean, generates a list of nominees from units not currently represented on the Research and Projects Advisory Board, including the units from which current memberships are expiring.

Members of the Educational and Research Policies Committee are responsible for securing nominees from their respective units. In addition, academic school deans and directors of academic units are notified of the election by the chairperson of the Educational and Research Policies Committee. Any faculty member with a research record is eligible to apply or to be nominated; the willingness of the candidate to serve should be ascertained prior to nomination. Candidate vitae are forwarded to the Graduate Office for reproduction and distribution.

B. Ballots listing the nominees, with their vitae attached, are mailed to Graduate Council members, who indicate their preference for the number of candidates to be elected on a weighted scale, the highest number being assigned to first choice. The individual(s) who receives the highest tallies will be elected.
