Programs and Events for High School Students

Are you considering a career in engineering, computer science or construction? The SIUE School of Engineering offers several programs that allow you and other middle and high school students to learn about various fields of engineering and career choices.

Engineering Open House

The School organizes an Open House every spring semester. Learn more and to register for our Open House.

Engineering Summer Camps

You are invited to spend a week with us in the summer and experience engineering first-hand. Our summer camps offer a great way to learn about different engineering programs and get involved in exciting hands-on engineering projects. Design and build a rain garden, build a small-scale replica of a fuel cell car, experiment with solar engery, construct a working PVC pipe bridge, build robots and more!

Robotics - Botball Tournament

The School of Engineering faculty and students facilitate several robotics mini camps annually, and visit middle schools throughout the year to talk about robotics and the importance of robots in our lives. Botball is an international robotics competition for high school and middle school students. The School of Engineering hosts the Greater St. Louis Regional Botball Tournament each year.

Recommended High School Preparation for Students Interested in Engineering

If you plan to study engineering in college, good high school preparation is important. Ideally, you should have

four years of English

one year of chemistry

six or seven semesters of mathematics, up to and including trigonometry at a minimum

Beyond these, it is helpful to have

one or two semesters of physics

social studies

a foreign language

honors courses or Advanced Placement (AP) courses that may be available at your high school

Mathematics is very important for any engineering degree, so place extra emphasis in doing your best in the mathematics courses you take. Your mathematics background will be the foundation upon which you will build your engineering education. It is important for that foundation to be strong for your future success as an engineer.

Don't worry if your math grades are less than perfect. Many students are in the same situation. SIUE has the necessary remedial courses and support systems in place to guide you through. As a freshman, you will be given a mathematics placement test. The results will help us assess your current background and determine the best sequence of mathematics courses for you.

Find out if your high school offers a pre-engineering curriculum such as Project Lead The Way or the Infinity Project. If either of these programs is available at your high school consider taking one or two courses in the pre-engineering curriculum.
