Course Information
CI 557 The Art and Practice of Teaching
(Master of Arts in Teaching Program, Technology Strand)

Target Audience
Pre-service secondary education students enrolled in the SIUE Master of Arts in Teaching Program.

Format
AAM serves as one strand (technology strand) of seven. Other strands within the degree program consist of Foundation of Education, Educational Psychology, Pedagogy, Classroom Management, Teaching Literacy in the Content Areas, and Special Education. Classes are delivered through lecture and group collaboration.

Each strand conducts four seminars over four blocks (or four semesters) that is equivalent to a three credit graduate course.

Location
The seminars are held at the SIUE campus in a computer lab to provide a “hands on” learning environment in accessing digital media from the Library of Congress website.

Course Goal
The goal of this course is to prepare pre-service classroom teachers to effectively access, integrate, and produce curricula that utilize the digitized primary source materials from the collections of the Library of Congress. The course will focus on technology standards and technology integration into the 9th-12th grade classroom and the nature of primary sources and classroom applications for digital technology. This course also provides hands-on experience using the historical texts, photographs, motion pictures, maps and sound recordings from the Library of Congress American Memory digital collections.
