Why Psychology?

Psychologists study the human mind and human behavior. Psychology is one of the most popular undergraduate majors across the country.

Psychology at SIUE

At SIUE, we offer a wide and varied range of classes at the undergraduate level in the major topical areas of psychology - developmental, cognitive, social, biological, clinical, personality, and industrial/organizational. Our students gain a strong foundation in research methodology and statistics. Majors begin their coursework with a Careers in Psychology course, specially designed to introduce students to the field. The Capstone in Psychology course serves as the culminating experience for students during their Senior year.

Students receive extensive experience in critical thinking, research design, data analysis and presentation of research in results written and oral form. High school students are encouraged to develop a strong background in math (at least through algebra), science (especially biology), writing, and computer use as preparation for the Psychology Major.

Career Outlook

Students obtaining an undergraduate degree in Psychology will find themselves well prepared to pursue a variety of jobs for which there is growing demand, including: personnel officers, laboratory technicians, sales or public relations specialists, customer services, suicide prevention workers, mental health or corrections workers, juvenile and youth services, substance abuse services, statisticians and research analysts, and a variety of other social services.
