About Dr. Herrick

Dr. Herrick is an exercise physiologist, full-time faculty member, and the director of the Exercise Science Program in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education.  Dr. Herrick’s graduate training was focused on the effects of obesity on cardiopulmonary responses to exercise in both adults and adolescents along with the role of exercise as a clinical intervention for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic disease.  Dr. Herrick also consults for professional and amateur endurance athletes and is the owner of Allez Training Systems.

Dr. Herrick’s research interests are focused on the effects of weight loss through both surgical and lifestyle interventions and changes in exercise ventilation.  Specifically, Dr. Herrick is interested in obesity-related chest wall resistance and reduced chemosensitivity and the associated impact on ventilatory efficiency, ventilatory drive, and hypercapnia during exercise. Dr. Herrick is a co-investigator with SIUE’s Adult Weight Management Clinic where he provides fitness assessments, educational lectures, and exercise prescription.  Dr. Herrick has presented and published his research both nationally and internationally, and is a professional member of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Herrick teaches both graduate and undergraduate course in exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, exercise endocrinology, advanced exercise assessment, and senior seminar.
