Testing & Study Resources
All certification tests are administered by Illinois Certification Testing System (ICTS). Tests are offered in various locations throughout the site on specific testing days. Students need to pre-register in advance and be aware of
test day guidelines. More information is available at the
ICTS testing web site.
The Illinois State Board of Education will only allow an individual to take each test a
maximum of 5 times. The following tests are ALL required in order to obtain an Illinois Teaching Certificate:
- Test of Academic Proficiency - must be passed prior to being admitted to any teacher education program at SIUE.
- Content Area Test (test code varies)- must be passed prior to student teaching (check with your OCECA advisor for testing deadlines and test codes). Students should take the tests that correspond to their major area of study
- Assessment of Professional Teaching (APT) test (test code varies) – must be passed prior to being issued an Illinois Teaching Certificate. Students should take the tests that correspond to the grade ranges of their respective program teaching certificate.
