SIUE AND THE EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER WILL RE-OPEN TUESDAY, JANUARY 3, 2012
During Fall 2009, we finished the renovation and expansion of the SIUE Early Childhood Center building
to include two new classrooms and additional common space. Our new building includes several sustainable design features including rain gardens at all downspouts, low flow facets to reduce water use, sensors to reduce electric lighting levels, flooring materials made using recycled content and other features.
The existing playground, while it has some excellent features including gardens, bird feeding stations and beautiful new fencing is basically a traditional playground. In an effort to expand our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability plans are underway for an outdoor classroom that reflects the prairie and woodland setting of the campus, a space that would support our programs emphasis on valuing and learning about the natural world.
