<p><strong>SIU Dental Student Wins National Student Research Group Award</strong></p>
<p>The seventeenth Hinman Student Research Symposium was held October 28-30, 2011 at the historic Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. The Symposium featured oral and poster presentations of research projects by dental students and graduate students from dental schools across the nation. At this year’s Symposium, 90 students represented 41 dental schools in 24 states, the District of Columbia, and 4 Canadian provinces.</p>
<p>Eight awards were given for the most outstanding student presentations, four in clinical research and four in basic science research. In addition, one presentation won the 2011 President’s Award for Excellence in Dental Research from the National Students Research Group (NSRG) of the American Association for Dental Research. This year the NSRG Award was presented to Jillian Rigert of the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine.</p>
<p>Ms. Rigert earned the award for her oral presentation, entitled “The Role of TRPA1 in nociception following pulpal exposure of Sprague-Dawley rats.” Her research project focused on pain management in dentistry and medicine. She studied the time course of expression of the TRPA1 receptor, which has a role in pain perception following injury to dental pulp. The project was directed by Dr. Kevin Rowland, Associate Professor of Physiology at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine.</p>
<p>The Symposium is sponsored by the University of Tennessee, College of Dentistry and co-sponsored by the Hinman Dental Society. The Symposium is also supported in part by grants from the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), the ADEAGies Foundation, the Procter & Gamble Company, and the Tennessee Dental Association Foundation.<br /><br /><strong>2011 President’s Award for Excellence in Dental Research Photo:</strong> <a href="/id0904f67a806d4a81" target="_blank">1</a></p>

<h2><a href="Research_Day" id="Research_Day"> </a>Research Day 2011: Celebrating Research at SIU SDM!</h2>
<br />On April 12, 2011, the SIU School of Dental Medicine hosted its annual Research Day. This year the event featured the annual Student Table Clinic Competition and Dr. Robert Kelly, internationally recognized for his work in clinical research, as the Guest Speaker.
<p>Student researchers provided 13 competitive presentations during the Student Table Clinic Competition, and they challenged the table clinic judges to select a single overall winner. After careful deliberation, the judges selected the research of Mr. Alec Rice, a Year II dental student, to receive the 2011 SIU SDM Research Day First Place Overall Award and the Illinois State Dental Society (ISDS) Clinical Research Award.</p>
<p>Mr. Rice’s table clinic research was entitled, “The Relationship of Parental Involvement and Preference for Consistency in Adolescent Orthodontic Patient Compliance.” His faculty sponsor was Dr. Jessica Hinz, Assistant Professor in the Section of Behavioral Science at SIU SDM.</p>
<p>In addition to a recognition plaque and monetary award, Mr. Rice will represent the SIU dental school at the ADA/Dentsply Student Clinician Program at the ADA Annual Session, which will be held in Las Vegas this year. Mr. Rice will also present his table clinic at the ISDS Annual Session in the fall.</p>
<p>Ms. Jillian Rigert, a Year II dental student, earned second place overall for her table clinic research entitled, “Role of TRPA1 in Nociception Following Pulpal Exposure in Sprague-Dawley Rats.” As second place overall winner, Ms. Rigert will have the opportunity to present her table clinic at the Hinman Student Research Symposium in Memphis, TN.</p>
<p>Ms. Rigert also earned the ISDS Basic Science Research Award. In recognition of this award, Ms. Rigert will present her research at the ISDS Annual Session, which will be held in St. Louis this year.</p>
<p>Mr. Brad Carn, a Year III dental student, earned third place overall for his table clinic research entitled, “In Vivo and Histologic Response of Rat Oral Mucosa to a new Dental Anesthetic Paste.” Mr. Carn also earned the ISDS Literature Review/Dental Health Education Award and will join Mr. Rice and Ms. Rigert at the ISDS Annual Session in September 2011.</p>
<p>The judges of the Student Table Clinic Competition were faced with a difficult chore in selecting winners among a competitive field of student research. We certainly appreciate their time and effort. Judges from the Illinois State Dental Society Foundation were Drs. Sue Bishop and Larry Tschopp. Judges from the SIU School of Dental Medicine faculty were Drs. Anita Joy and Eva Niu.</p>
<p>Dr. Robert Kelly, Director of the Dental Clinical Research Center at the University of Connecticut Health Science Center, was the Guest Speaker at the 2011 Research Day. Dr. Kelly also serves as a Professor in the Department of Reconstructive Sciences and the Center for Biomaterials at the University of Connecticut Health Science Center. Dr. Kelly’s research focuses on the development of new clinical products and their translation to patient care.</p>
<p>Dr. Kelly provided two well received lectures during the day—one in the morning for an academic audience and one in the afternoon for a broader audience. The morning lecture was titled, “Evolution of Biomaterials Research in Dentistry and the Role of Industry in Academic Collaborations.” The afternoon lecture was titled, “Clinical Meaning of Laboratory Tests: How to Read the Materials Literature as Evidence.”</p>

<p>Each year, the SIU SDM Research Day features the annual Student Table Clinic Competition. Winners of the competition earn opportunities to present their research at research competitions throughout the country. <p><strong>2012 Dean's Summer Student Research Program</strong></p>
<p>Each year, funding is made available for student participation in summer research, sponsored by SDM faculty. Up to five (5) research fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis as determined by merit of a submitted research proposal. This program is designed to introduce a student to research; funding for a second year student is approved only in rare cases. <p><strong>American Association of Oral Biologists Award</strong></p>
<p>Each year, one student earns the American Association of Oral Biologists Award. The award recognizes a worthy senior dental student who has displayed achievement in original research in the biology of the oral cavity or related structures; demonstrates high academic achievement in basic science courses and displays an interest or appreciation for teaching in oral biology and public understanding of research and education in oral biology. Ms. Nicole Elger earned the honor and award for the Class of 2011.</p>
<p><strong>Quintessence Award for Research Achievement</strong></p>
<p>Each year, one student earns the Quintessence Award for Research Achievement. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in research. Ms. Katie Spencer earned the honor and award for the Class of 2011.</p>
