Dr. Josie DeGroot earned her Ph.D. in Communication Studies at Ohio University in 2009. Josie’s research focuses on interpersonal communication, computer-mediated communication, and communicative issues of death and dying. Her dissertation explored the intersection of the three areas, as she examined Facebook memorial group walls to determine how people continue relationships with the deceased by writing to them. Future research plans include investigating death and online voyeurism (“Emotional Rubbernecking”) and developing a more comprehensive model of Transcorporeal Communication.
A South Dakota native, Josie is fond of flat land and a little bit of snow every now and again. She also enjoys watching television and being online. Josie lives with her husband, Derrick Brown and their dog, Bill Nye.
