School Social Work Curriculum – Information for Full-time Students

Revised 7/27/2010

Application to the school program is a special and separate application due January 15 of each year for the following fall semester.

There are three ways for full-time students to complete this program: as a regular standing student, as an advanced standing student (the school program requires an additional three semesters of study), or post-MSW.  All students must complete SPE400 and pass the Illinois Basic Skills Test before starting the school social work courses and internship. (This does not need to be done before applying for acceptance to the school social work program.)

Part-time students should see their advisors. All students may contact Dr. Wesley for further clarification and information.

I.  Regular Standing Students

The curriculum requirements for school social work specialization are:

SPE400-3 The Exceptional Child (This class must be taken before the fall semester in which the student begins the school social work curriculum.)

SOCW533-2 Social Work Practice in Schools

SOCW567-2 Seminar in School Social Work

SOCW568-4 Advanced Field III School Social Work – substitutes for SOCW528 (a minimum of 300 hours)

SOCW569-4 Advanced Field IV School Social Work – substitutes for SOCW529 (a minimum of 300 hours)

These courses are taken in the 2nd year (Concentration) of the curriculum, except for SPE400 which is a prerequisite for the school program. You must fit this into your schedule before you take the school social work classes and internship.

The course schedule including additions and substitutions to the normal schedule for the second year of curriculum for students in the school social work program are as follows:

Fall

All regular curriculum courses based on concentration

SOCW568 (substitutes for SOCW528)

SOCW533 (two hour seminar)

Spring

All regular curriculum courses based on concentration

SOCW569 (substitutes for SOCW529)

SOCW567 (two hour seminar)

Summer

No practicum/internship

SOCW565 - Capstone

II. Advanced Standing Students

Because the school program must be completed in the regular nine month school year, the school program for advanced standing students requires an additional year of study. The required courses are the same as for regular standing students. They are:

SPE400-3 The Exceptional Child (This class must be taken before the fall semester in which the student begins the school social work curriculum.)

SOCW533-2 Social Work Practice in Schools

SOCW567-2 Seminar in School Social Work

SOCW568-4 Advanced Field III School Social Work – substitutes for SOCW528

SOCW569-4 Advanced Field IV School Social Work – substitutes for SOCW529

Please note: You must fit SPE400 into your schedule before you take the school social work classes and internship.

The advanced standing curriculum is as follows for school social work students:

First Year:

Fall

 Normal concentration curriculum

Spring

Normal concentration curriculum except no practicum

Summer

Normal concentration curriculum except no practicum and no SOCW565 – Capstone

Second Year:

Fall

SOCW533-2 Social Work Practice in Schools

SOCW568-4 Advanced Field III School Social Work

Spring

SOCW567-2 Seminar in School Social Work

SOCW569-4 Advanced Field IV School Social Work

Summer

SOCW565 – Capstone

III. Post-MSW

Students may complete the school social work program in one semester after receiving their MSW degrees.  SPE400 is a prerequisite and should be completed before beginning the semester of school social work.  Students complete SOCW533 – Social Work Practice in Schools and SOCW 572, a full-time block internship of a minimum of 600 hours in the fall semester.
