&lt;h3&gt;General Information&lt;/h3&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;PHI SIGMA TAU is the International Honor Society in philosophy.&amp;nbsp; Southern Illinois University Edwardsville&amp;rsquo;s chapter, the Pi chapter of Illinois, was founded in 2006.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;The mission statement of PHI SIGMA TAU is:&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;ol&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;To serve as a means of awarding distinction to students having high scholarship and personal interest in philosophy;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;To promote student interest in research and advanced study in this field;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;To provide opportunities for the publication of student research papers of merit;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;To encourage a professional spirit and friendship among those who have displayed marked ability in this field;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;To popularize interest in philosophy among the general collegiate public.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&#13;
&lt;/ol&gt;&#13;
&lt;h3&gt;The Insignia&lt;/h3&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;The emblem of Phi Sigma Tau is in the shape of a pentagon. Each of the five angles contains a symbol representing one of the five streams of world thought: Chinese, Indian, Islamic, Hebrew, and Greek. The seal of Phi Sigma Tau is the reverse side of the Athenian Silver Tetradrachma (B.C. 480-400), bearing the owl, olive spray, and small crescent. The colors of Phi Sigma Tau are white and purple.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

&lt;h3&gt;Criteria for Membership&lt;/h3&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;In order to become a member of PHI SIGMA TAU, students must:&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;1. have completed at least three university level courses in philosophy&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;2. have maintained at least a 3.25 grade point average in philosophy courses&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;3. have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;h3&gt;Benefits of Becoming a Member&lt;/h3&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;All PHI SIGMA TAU members of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Pi Chapter will receive a subscription to Dialogue, the biannual undergraduate philosophy journal (issues are published in April and October).&amp;nbsp; Members will also receive the PHI SIGMA TAU Newsletter sent by the International Office of PHI SIGMA TAU.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;PHI SIGMA TAU members also play an active role in organizing and participating in the annual &lt;a href="/artsandsciences/philosophy/upc/index.shtml"&gt;Undergraduate Philosophy Conference&lt;/a&gt; at SIUE.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;SIUE members are especially encouraged to submit their work to Dialogue, which publishes articles of philosophical interest, as well as book reviews written by undergraduate students in philosophy.&amp;nbsp; For more information, please contact advisor &lt;a href="/id0904f67a8048d2fd"&gt;Dr. Rebecca Rozelle-Stone &lt;/a&gt;(arozell@siue.edu).&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;h3&gt;How to apply&lt;/h3&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;Please download, print, and fill out the following form [&lt;a href="/artsandsciences/philosophy/pdf/Application_form.pdf" target="_blank"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;] and deliver the application and check (&lt;em&gt;see Dues&lt;/em&gt;) to Dr. Lucian Stone in Peck Hall, Room 3232.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;h3&gt;Dues&lt;/h3&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;Inductees must pay a one-time $25.00 fee. Please make the check out to &amp;quot;Phi Sigma Tau.&amp;quot;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;h3&gt;Induction&lt;/h3&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;PHI SIGMA TAU accepts new applications twice per year, or once per semester: November 15th is the deadline for the Fall semester and April 15th is the deadline for the Spring semester.&amp;nbsp; You need to turn your completed application and your dues by these respective dates.&amp;nbsp; Prospective members are welcome to attend meetings and events prior to their induction.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

&lt;p&gt;Mindy Young is participating in the Undergraduate Research Academy (2008-2009) for her research project, &amp;ldquo;Transaesthetics: The Philosophy of Hamid Dabashi.&amp;rdquo;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;Mindy Young&amp;rsquo;s book review of The Meaning of Life: A Reader, edited by Steven Cahn and E.D. Klemke, was published in Dialogue.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

&lt;p&gt;Mike Augustine - Mike is at the University of Colorado in Denver getting his M.A. in English.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;Julia Batty &amp;ndash; Julia is a graduate student in philosophy at the Universiteit van Amsterdam.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

&lt;p&gt;Mindy Young Lawson - Mindy Lawson was accepted into the Ph.D. program at the University of Oregon in Philosophy and awarded a graduate teaching fellowship and a summer stipend.&amp;nbsp; She presented her paper, &amp;quot;A Nietzschean Response to the Demands of Beauty in Contemporary Western Society,&amp;quot; at the 13th Annual Undergraduate Philosophy Conference at Pacific University in Oregon, April 13-15, 2009, with support from the Undergraduate Research Academy and the College of Arts and Sciences.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
