Michael Mishra is Professor and Director of Orchestral Activities at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he also teaches courses in orchestration, conducting, analysis, and symphonic literature. He has conducted the Filharmonie Hradec Kralove (Czech Republic) and the Silesian State Opera during their summer festivals, and in 2001, made his debut with the Bulgarian National Radio symphony Orchestra in Sofia and the Vratza State Philharmonic. He won the First Prize at the 2003 Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting Competition in Kharkov, Ukraine, for which he has received engagements in Ukraine, Russia, Austria, Korea, and Bolivia. He has also been the recipient of the International Opera Workshop Conductor's Award (Czech Republic, 2000) and the Antonia Brico Award for Conductors (1991).

Dr. Mishra's main research area is the life and works of Dmitri Shostakovich. He is currently preparing a 500-page volume, The Shostakovich Companion,to be published by Greenwood in 2004. He has twice been a visiting researcher at the Centre Shostakovich at the Leonardo da Vinci University in Paris. In 2000, he lectured at the International Shostakovich Symposium in Glasgow, Scotland, on Shostakovich's reorchestration of Schumann's Cello Concerto.
