Visiting lecturers and artists bring new perspectives and insights, which can spur creativity for students and faculty alike. Master classes, demonstrations and lectures offer students and faculty invaluable opportunities to interact with outstanding role models in their academic fields.

Campus visits of up to one semester by national and internationally renowned professors and artists afford students and faculty the unique opportunity to work with "the best of the best" in the arts, sciences, social sciences and humanities. A visiting artist/professor program will raise the national profile of programs at SIUE, enhancing recruitment and retention of gifted faculty and students. It will also offer enhanced cultural opportunities to the community-at-large.

Many prominent researchers and artists have shared their insights recently with the SIUE community. These include, Dr. Gary M. Hieftje of Indiana University in Bloomington, who presented the 2010 Probst Lecture for the Department of Chemistry on the topics of “Models, Methods, and Machines for Chemical Measurements” and “Teaching and Research: Symbiosis or Conflict?” Dr. Hieftje is pictured in the center of the photo on the far left with Dr. Chin-Chuan Wei, assistant professor of chemistry at SIUE, and Tiffany Boyle, one of the recipients of the SIUE Thomas D. Bouman Memorial Research Scholar Award presented in conjunction with the Probst Lecture. Gererd Rancourt Tsonakwa, an Abenkai Native American storyteller, author and director of the Plumer School of Arts and Sciences in Tucson, Ariz., spent several days with the Department of Theater and Dance in November 2009. He presented several lectures on shamanism and magic in Native America, archaeoastronomy, and tribal stories. The highlight of his visit was a multi-media piece presented as part of Dance in Concert 2009, shown in the middle photograph, which he choreographed and provided costume and background design. Sculptor Susan Beiner, shown leading a workshop on the far right, was the guest artist for the Wagner Potter Association's 34th Turkey Feast in November 2010. She provided several demonstrations and lectures for SIUE art students and faculty, and also assessed student work. She is an assistant professor of art at Arizona State University.
