<h2><strong>Measures of Success<br /></strong></h2>
<ul>
<li>Undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) represent 61 percent of the total SIUE student enrollment, providing the highest number of student credit hour instruction of all University academic units—more than 200,600 hours (59 percent) last year.</li>
<li>CAS faculty members have received prestigious grants from agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences, National Science Foundation and American Chemical Society. In 2009, the College’s faculty successfully secured a total of $2.8 million in grants for 71 projects—a 38 percent increase over the previous year. An additional $18.6 million in CAS research funding was pending at the close of fiscal year 2009.</li>
<li>The College introduced an environmental sciences management program—without new funding or faculty—after a regional need for the program was identified. A new specialization in environmental toxicology offers collaborative research opportunities with colleagues in the Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy.</li>
<li>In response to the University’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives, the Department of Chemistry is obtaining approval for a Master of Arts in chemistry education to prepare high school chemistry teachers.</li>
<li>The College recruited a chemistry faculty member to lead the development of a forensics degree program, a regional need identified by the local police department.</li>
