Technology: Mass Communications

Mass Comm Computer Lab

The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications has accredited a little more than 100 programs in the United States, including the program at SIUE. This status ensures that educational standards of SIUE's Mass Communications program are inline with the strict guidelines and standards outlined by the ACEJMC. SIUE offers one of five ACEJMC-accredited mass communications programs in the state of Illinois, and the only one in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

The field of mass communications is changing at a rapid pace. Technologies that are currently standard in the industry were not even conceptualized one or two decades ago. The Mass Communications Department needs to stay abreast of these changing technologies to prepare future broadcasters, journalists, and media and advertising specialists. The department is seeking $150,000 to create a digital multi-media laboratory with up-to-date equipment, software and computers. This media lab would help the department provide its students with the technical skills base they will need for their fast-paced careers.

Additionally, the department is establishing an endowment to provide permanent funding to keep up with its technology needs. The cost of setting up such an endowment is $475,000.
