<h2><br />Summer Bridge Program</h2>

<ul>
<li>The Summer Bridge Program, begun in 2001, is offered through Instructional Services to provide at-risk students with an orientation to University academic expectations, along with a full complement of developmental courses during the summer prior to their fall entrance into SIUE.</li>
<li>At-risk students receive a concentrated program to improve reading, writing, and mathematics skills as well as assistance with basic study habits that will be essential for success in college.</li>
<li>Bridge readies students for fall general education courses for which their skill development is a prerequisite.</li>
<li>Many more students could participate in Bridge each summer, if available state funding and scholarship contributions were available.</li>

<ul>
<li>Bridge participants have been retained into their second year at a much higher rate (77%) than the retention rate of other full-time freshman students (68.8%). Following the Bridge Program, participants have earned respectable grades as well as credit hours that put them on track to graduate.</li>
<li>The cost of the program is underwritten by the College of Arts and Sciences and student tuition. In some cases, parents and students may need a partial tuition scholarship to meet the full cost of the program.</li>

<p><strong>Scholarship gifts are needed to subsidize the $750 per session student tuition required for participation in the Bridge program.</strong></p>
